THE COMMONTONE: A Practical Guide to Improvisation
A common tone is simply a note that stays the same throughout a chord progression. Common tones, just like guide tone lines, are a very useful concept for writing melodies, voicing harmonies or improvising.
If
you already have a chord progression, simply look for notes that are
present in every chord (“common” to every chord).
Sometimes you might have to add chord options to
make this work.
